Amino Acids Running

What is an advantage of having multiple codons for a single amino acid?

Sometimes, one-nucleotide transcription errors don’t change the amino acid specified.
B.More protein can be made.
C.More amino acids can be made.
D.If one amino acid runs out, others can be used.

The answer is A.

The redundancy of the genetic code, among other functions, means single nucleotide transcription errors MAY code for the same protein. For example, UAU and UAC both code for tyrosine, so this kind of change wouldn’t have any affect. However, some times even a single nucleotide change can be drastic. Sickle cell anemia is caused by the replacement of glutamic acid (GAA) with valine (GUA). Glutamic acid has a polar side group, while valine is nonpolar. This is so drastic, it causes the cells to sickle.
